ASU business students give back to the community

Maddie Hayes has been passionate about volunteering since she was a kid. Luckily both ASU and the W. P. Carey School of Business emphasize the importance of giving back to the community, offering every student ample opportunity to volunteer throughout the year.

I've been passionate about volunteering since I was a kid. So when I started college, I was bummed thinking that I wouldn't have the time or opportunity to do any volunteer work. Luckily both ASU and the W. P. Carey School of Business emphasize the importance of giving back to the community, offering every student ample opportunity to volunteer throughout the year.

After being a W. P. Carey student for only a year and a half, I have already given back to the community as a volunteer at St. Mary's Food Bank, Feed My Starving Children, and St. Vincent de Paul. I also participated in Devils in Disguise — an annual event inviting students from across the university to commit one morning to service. ASU students simultaneously completed more than 1.8 million hours of service to the community during last year's event. It was very rewarding experience.

I have had the honor of being the vice president and director of philanthropy for the American Marketing Association (AMA) since my second week at the W. P. Carey School. I’m already planning on taking 25 members from the AMA and Business Communication Students Association (BCSA) to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children in the next month.

I highly recommend joining clubs with these kind of opportunities, and if you are in a club that does offer volunteer events, definitely participate! Philanthropy events can also turn into social events, bringing a closer bond to club members and new friends across ASU.

Whether you are a part of a student organization or not, I recommend that you research and try going to Feed My Starving Children, St. Mary's Food Bank, and St. Vincent de Paul. I recommend these organizations because they are very easy to sign up for, and I have had a great experience with all three.
